Export Health Certification

Several of our equine vets have the official veterinarian (OV) qualification which allows for the certification of equine export paperwork. We regularly export horses travelling aboard from yards, local horse trials and racecourses.   

Whether you are a private individual or a commercial enterprise, there are a number of rules and regulations surrounding taking your horse abroad. The export requirements change depending on where you are taking your horse, how long for and why. Furthermore, post-Brexit changes to horse export rules mean it’s now even more important to plan ahead and book any necessary appointments or tests well in advance.

An application for export certification should be submitted to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) through a shipping agent, who will be able to offer advice to ensure that all requirements of the destination country are met. 

Our equine vets are able to offer blood sampling and swabbing services as required by the destination country. It is important to arrange any necessary health testing well in advance of the export date.

All horses must have been inspected by an OV within 48 hours of transport, and their documentation carefully checked and completed. The vet will then sign and stamp the certificate issued by the APHA, which must accompany the horse and its passport on the journey.
